Paris (dpa) – A total of 650 cars were set alight on New Year’s Eve across France, the Interior Ministry in Paris said on Sunday, a rise from the 602 that were burnt out the previous year.
The burning of cars has become almost a ritual for New Year’s Eve in France, but the numbers had decreased by 20 per cent in the last five years, the ministry said.
French authorities reported that there had been “some tensions or disturbances of the public order” during the night, but no major incidents.
Police arrested 454 people, and 301 of them ended up in custody.
More than 100,000 police officers, soldiers, fire officers and civil defence officers were deployed across the country during the night.
Fears of a terrorist attack meant that there were strict security controls in the capital Paris for the traditional New Year’s Eve party on the Champs-Elysees
