A mother shot and killed an armed suspect in front of her young children during an attempted home invasion in Indianapolis on Wednesday.
Indianapolis police confirmed the fatal shooting and said the mother and her four children were fine, according to local NBC4i.com.
The mother came face to face with the armed intruder in front of her children, who were all under the age of seven. Police said she shot the intruder and protected her children in the process.
Police confirmed the suspect was indeed armed. He was unidentified as of press time.
Neighbors told Fox affiliate Fox 59 the mother was justified in shooting the intruder.
“She was protecting herself and her kids and that’s the right thing to do,” said neighbor Julius Radcliff.
Radcliff said she heard the gunshots and watched as one man ran away from the scene while a second person drove away. Police have not confirmed if those other two are considered suspects in the case.
Other neighbors told Fox 59 it was said a suspect got killed, but they didn’t blame the mother for protecting herself and her children.
“I hate to see that it happened, but that’s what happens when you go into people’s home trying to take their stuff,” said Radcliff.
“You have to defend yourself. We have laws for that,” said neighbor Janice Taylor.
Wednesday’s shooting is the second day in a row a homeowner shot and killed an intruder in Marion County, Indiana.
On Tuesday, an 18-year-old tried to enter the residence of a home and was shot and killed by a homeowner. The suspect was identified as Derrick Johnson Jr. and he was pronounced dead on the scene.
