Afghanistan’s former President Ashraf Ghani on the U.S. withdrawal and Taliban takeover

The Taliban surged into Kabul in August of last year after swiftly encircling the whole nation. The American retreat was further complicated by the Afghan security forces’ lack of resistance, and the Afghan government quickly fell apart. Former president Ashraf Ghani, who escaped Kabul in a helicopter, joins Nick Schifrin to talk about the withdrawal and the Taliban takeover.

A year of peace under the Taliban administration in Wardak, Afghanistan, resulted in a halt to business and the loss of numerous jobs.
The wounds of battle can still be seen on the highways leading from Kabul to Maydan Shahr, the capital of the Wardak district. There were battles between the Taliban and forces of the former Afghan government under the command of President Ashraf Ghani less than a year ago.
