Biden warns world would face ‘Armageddon’ if Putin uses a tactical nuclear weapon in Ukraine

In his starkest assessment yet, US president says world is the closest it has come to nuclear catastrophe in 60 years

In order to attempt and win the battle in Ukraine, Joe Biden has warned that Vladimir Putin may use a tactical nuclear bomb, which he has dubbed “Armageddon.”

The US president said it was the closest the world had gone to nuclear catastrophe in sixty years during his most forceful speech to date about the possibility of nuclear war at a Democratic fundraiser in New York.

“We have not faced the prospect of Armageddon since Kennedy and the Cuban missile crisis,” he said.

“We’ve got a guy I know fairly well,” Biden said, referring to the Russian president. “He’s not joking when he talks about potential use of tactical nuclear weapons or biological or chemical weapons because his military is, you might say, significantly underperforming.”

In an effort to dissuade the US and its allies from supporting Ukraine and assisting it in fending off the all-out Russian invasion that was launched in February, Putin and his officials have frequently threatened to use Russia’s nuclear arsenal. One worry is that he would try to halt Ukraine’s counteroffensive in its tracks with a short-range “tactical” nuclear bomb, forcing Kiev to talk and lose territory.

If Russia were to use a nuclear weapon, the US and its allies would be faced with a difficult decision regarding how to react. Most experts and former officials believe that if Washington used military force, it would most likely do so with conventional weapons in an effort to prevent a rapid escalation to an all-out nuclear war. On Thursday night, though, Biden stated: “I don’t think there is any such thing as the capacity to easily (use) a tactical nuclear weapon and not end up with Armageddon.”

“First time since the Cuban missile crisis, we have the threat of a nuclear weapon if in fact things continue down the path they are going,” the president said. “We are trying to figure out what is Putin’s off-ramp? Where does he find a way out? Where does he find himself where he does not only lose face but significant power?”

Putin, according to US intelligence agencies, has come to perceive loss in Ukraine as an existential threat to his regime, which he associates with an existential threat to Russia. This may conceivably legitimize the deployment of nuclear weapons in his view of the world.

Volodymyr Zelenskiy, the president of Ukraine, stated earlier on Thursday that Putin was aware that a nuclear attack by Russia would be “never forgiven” by the rest of the world.

“He understands that after the use of nuclear weapons he would be unable any more to preserve, so to speak, his life, and I’m confident of that,” Zelenskiy said.
