Competing to Build the Tallest Human Towers in Spain

Members of the Jove de Tarragona team work together to form the base of a “castell” (human tower) during the 28th castells competition at Tarraco arena in Tarragona, Spain, on October 2, 2022.

The yearly human tower competition in Tarragona, Spain, was back in full swing over the weekend after a break during the worst of the COVID-19 outbreak. Building “castells”—human towers—in teams, “castlers” compete to construct the tallest and most intricate buildings they can. It is thought that at the end of the 18th century, regional dancing organizations were where the Catalan heritage first arose. This year’s winning team constructed a tower that rose ten tiers over the surrounding spectators.
