ICE TSUNAMI CRASHES ONTO SHORELINE IN FORT ERIE, ON – 02/24/2019
A historic storm system with extreme winds pushed Lake Erie’s ice cover violently into Fort Erie resulting in a rare and incredible phenomenon known as an ice shove or ice tsunami. This formed when extreme pressure built up because of the ice pack being pushed into the extreme eastern tip of Lake Erie combined with a seiche of around 11ft. Massive ice blocks weighing hundreds and thousands of pounds were sent cascading onto the shoreline and far enough inland to impact stands of trees and spill onto Lakeshore Road!
