Serial killer David Berkowitz, also known as the 44 Caliber Killer and the Son of Sam, killed six people in New York City before he was apprehended in 1977.
On June 1, 1953, in Brooklyn, New York, Richard David Falco became David Berkowitz. Shortly before his birth, his unmarried parents split up, and he was given up for adoption. His first and middle names were altered by his adoptive parents, and they also gave him their last name. Berkowitz started displaying the precursors to his aggressive conduct patterns at a young age. Despite having above-average intelligence, he stopped caring about academics and instead gave attention to more rebellious behaviors. Berkowitz became interested in pyromania and small-time theft. However, his disobedience never got him into trouble with the law or had an effect on his grades. Berkowitz’s adoptive mother passed away from breast cancer when he was 14 years old, and his bonds with his adoptive father and new stepmother soured.
In 1971, when Berkowitz was 18 years old, he immigrated here. Army and served in both South Korea and the United States. Three years later, he received an honorable discharge. Then Berkowitz located Betty Falco, his biological mother. Berkowitz was deeply disturbed when his mother informed him about his illegitimate birth and the recent passing of his birth father. After some time, he stopped speaking to his birth mother and started doing various blue-collar jobs.
A young man by the name of David Berkowitz terrorized New York between the summers of 1976 and 1977 by randomly shooting innocent teenagers in their automobiles. He said that Satan had taken control of his neighbor Sam’s dog and was using it to send him instructions to kill. He went by the name “Son of Sam.”

Berkowitz cruised Queens and the Bronx with a handgun in hand, looking for adolescents who would be easy targets for his covert gunfire. He left police with cryptic messages while also killing six people and injuring seven more.
