This original morse device, whose spark ignited the world of communication, existed even before the well-known Telegraph key. Yes, Western Union was all about the saddles and boots. A great nation’s expanding veins and humming wires are connected by the golden railroad spike. But everyone is aware that Commerce String Union performed well. The telegraph cable connected the Kansas cattle markets to the eastern trading floors, the New England cotton mills to the southern plantations, and the New York cutting floors. Other forms of communication were cumbersome and slow.
The Telegraph was the only fast, direct method of communication that could keep up with the nation’s growing borders.
The argument that Job 38:35 pertains to contemporary radio communication is undoubtedly one of the more absurd apologetics supporting Job’s scientific veracity. It says in the verse
35 Do you send the lightning bolts on their way?
Do they report to you, ‘Here we are’?
According to apologists, this verse beautifully describes the transmission and manifestation of the light as speech. Radio waves and light waves are both manifestations of electromagnetic waves, as modern science has found. In this sense, radio waves produced by radio transmitters are a type of light.
Apologists point out that our modern world can send lightnings that speak when they arrive saying in effect “here we are.”
Is God telling Job that electricity can be used to send a message? Like radio, cellphone, microwave, TV. Electricity sends a message two different ways through electricity through the wire and also through the electromagnetic force, the radio waves coming off of it. God told you of that four thousand years ago. Marconi and them guys had discovered in the last few hundred years.
Once again, we see the apologist making such a claim stumbling around the Bible’s language in an effort to fit any verse into their presumptive notion that Job demonstrates evidence of divinely inspired scientific correctness. Job 38:35, on the other hand, has nothing to do with transmitting information electronically; rather, it speaks of God causing lightning to fall from the sky. Ancient peoples like the Hebrews thought that when lightning erupted in the sky, thunder was its response.
The passage is referring of natural processes that are beyond human control in the larger context in which we find it. Such natural phenomena were solely under the authority of the diety according to Hebrew thought. Clouds and rain were mentioned in the stanza before this one.
Job 38:34 New International Version
34“Can you raise your voice to the clouds
and cover yourself with a flood of water?
So the following verse 35 remains in this context of phenomena referring to lightning which often accompanies rain storms and has nothing whatsoever to do with the modern invention of radio communications.
The verse is in this reference to this anthropomorphic idea of nature that it was almost alive and responded to the commands of God.
