Rescue efforts are under way in southwestern China’s mountainous Yunnan province after at least 47 people were buried in a landslide.
State news agency Xinhua reported that the disaster struck just before 6am (22:00 GMT on Sunday) in the village of Liangshui, beneath the town of Tangfang in Zhenxiong County.
Authorities said rescuers were trying to find victims buried in 18 separate houses. Xinhua showed footage of men in orange jumpsuits and hard hats picking their way though piles of concrete blocks and twisted steel. There was snow on some of the rubble and on buildings that were still standing.
The cause of the landslide was not immediately known.

ANKARA – Rescuers dug through debris after dozens of villagers were buried in a landslide that struck China’s southwestern Yunnan province early Monday, state media reported.
At least 47 people were buried when a landslide struck Liangshui village in the city of Zhaotong at 5:51 a.m. local time, according to Xinhua News Agency.
It said that Chinese President Xi Jinping has directed “all-out search and rescue” of the people missing in the landslide.
More than 200 rescuers backed by firefighting vehicles and loading machines were combing the debris to search for the missing.
Over 200 residents have been evacuated as the provincial commission for disaster reduction activated a level-3 emergency response for disaster relief.
Light snow with as low as negative 3 Celsius (26.6 F) temperature is expected to hit the town on Tuesday.
