TUCSON, Arizona — One week after sending a letter to President Biden, critiquing his administration’s handling of the border within her state, Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs (D)announced she will send the state’s Army National Guard to the border. The soldiers will assist the Arizona Department of Public Safety and local law enforcement agencies with security operations to include fentanyl interdiction, analytical support, and to suppress human trafficking.
On Friday, Hobbs signed an Executive Order mobilizing the soldiers as part of Arizona’s Operation SECURE. Launched in December, the operation created a new Border Security Office within the State’s Department of Homeland Security. The office will be financed for the first year with $2 Million from American Rescue Plan funding. The move to mobilize the National Guard and create a new border security office comes as waves of migrants have flooded Arizona border cities in recent weeks.
Hobbs is one of the latest Democrats to openly criticize the Biden administration over its handling of the migrant crisis gripping border communities and cities across the country as they struggle to deal with record-breaking migrant crossings. In her announcement of the signing of the executive order mobilizing the National Guard, Hobbs told reporters “Yet again, the federal government is refusing to do its job to secure our border and keep our communities safe. With this Executive Order, I am taking action where the federal government won’t. But we can’t stand alone, Arizona needs resources and manpower to reopen the Lukeville crossing, manage the flow of migrants, and maintain a secure, orderly, and humane border.”

For nearly three years, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has overseen, and indeed facilitated, the worst border crisis in American history. The evidence at this point is overwhelming—he has refused to follow and enforce numerous immigration laws passed by Congress, leading to unprecedented chaos and devastation at the Southwest border and across the country.
For example, the secretary has abused section 235(b) of the Immigration and Nationality Act. This law requires that all illegal aliens who enter the country be detained, whether they apply for asylum or not, until they are removed from the United States or found to have a legitimate claim.
Secretary Mayorkas has run roughshod over this statutory requirement. On his watch, more than 1.6 million inadmissible aliens have been paroled by DHS into the interior. Another 1.1 million have been provided “notices to appear” and released on their own recognizance, with the promise they will show up for their immigration court hearing. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Non-Detained Docket has grown from 3.26 million in Fiscal Year (FY) 2020 to more than 5.7 million as of September 2023.

President Joe Biden might be able to end a stalemate on border security and Ukraine aid. First he needs to navigate an ugly intraparty Democratic fight.
White House officials came to Capitol Hill Tuesday to bless negotiations on new border restrictions, which Republicans have said they need in order to greenlight cash for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan. But Hispanic legislators and immigrant advocates are deeply worried that the president will agree to restrictive new border regulations that resemble former President Donald Trump’s agenda in order to secure billions of dollars for Ukraine.
