WASHINGTON (AP) – With immigration shaping the elections that will decide control of Congress, Democrats are trying to outflank Republicans and convince voters they can address problems at the U.S. border with Mexico, embracing an issue that has traditionally been used against them.
The shift in strategy, especially from Democrats running in battleground states, comes as the Biden administration has struggled to manage an unprecedented influx of migrants at the Southwest border. Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, has led his party in vilifying immigrants as ” poisoning the blood ” of the country and called for mass deportations of migrants. And as the GOP looks to flip control of the Senate, they are tying Democrats to President Joe Biden’s handling of immigration.
The tactic has already figured large in elections like Arizona’s Senate race, a seat Democrats almost certainly need to win to save their majority. Republican Kari Lake has repeatedly linked Rep. Ruben Gallego, the likely Democratic nominee, to Biden, telling the crowd at a March event that “there’s really not a difference between the two.”
Democrats are no longer shrugging off such attacks: They believe they can tout their own proposals for fixing the border, especially after Trump and Republican lawmakers rejected a bipartisan proposal on border security earlier this year.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton told Newsmax on Friday that “it certainly feels like” there’s been a slowdown in the amount of illegal migrants crossing into Texas, and that’s not all.
Paxton told “Rob Schmitt Tonight” that federal agents have not been cutting down the wire or fences erected by Texas even though the courts recently ruled in the Biden administration’s favor to do so. Add in Mexico stopping asylum-seekers from reaching the U.S. border, and it all has the makings of an election-year miracle.
More like election-year problem solving — Biden wants his illegal immigration problem “to go away” until Nov. 5, Paxton said.
“Yeah, we all know what’s going on. There’s a deal. There’s a deal,” Paxton told host Rob Schmitt. “Otherwise, the Mexican government would not be doing this.”
Mexico deployed hundreds of law enforcement officers to the southern border at Juarez near El Paso, Texas, on Thursday to turn back a migrant caravan of roughly 2,000 asylum seekers. The timing was not lost on Paxton.
“This doesn’t happen randomly since we’ve been dealing with this for what, 3 1/2 years? And suddenly the Mexican government is stopping people from getting to our border,” Paxton said. “That’s not an accident, and that’s designed to help Joe Biden pull the election out because that is his worst issue, according to polling.”
Even though he doesn’t have the latest U.S. Customs and Border Patrol numbers, Paxton said “it certainly feels like” illegal entries have slowed.

Migrants at the United States-Mexico border say they “want [President Joe] Biden to win” the 2024 presidential election, while others hope to get released into the nation’s interior before election day — knowing their chances will be nearly eliminated under a second term of former President Donald Trump.
In interviews with The Free Press’s Peter Savodnik, migrants waiting to cross the southern border said they vastly prefer Biden to Trump in this year’s election, primarily because they say their chances of being freed into the U.S. interior are high with the current administration.
With Trump, though, they see those chances as disappearing.
“I want Biden to win,”45-year-old Daniel Cortez of Honduras, currently living in a migrant camp in northern Mexico, told Savodnik.
Richard Betancourt, a 46-year-old Venezuelan citizen also living at the migrant camp, said, “If it’s Trump, it doesn’t matter how much I work or want to work, they won’t let me in.”
