Iran declared Monday that it would keep up its efforts to secure the life sentence of a former Iranian official who was convicted in Sweden of taking part in the execution of political prisoners in Iran.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani stated, without providing details, “This unjust and outrageous ruling does not end Iran’s diplomatic efforts to repatriate and free this Iranian citizen, and we will use all legal and available means.”
A Swedish appeals court upheld the life sentence and guilty verdict for murder and major crimes against international law that former official Hamid Noury received last Tuesday.

Iran said on Monday it would continue efforts to gain the release of a former Iranian official sentenced in Sweden to life in prison for his part in a mass execution of political prisoners in Iran.
“This unjust and outrageous ruling does not end Iran’s diplomatic efforts to repatriate and free this Iranian citizen, and we will use all legal and available means,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanani said, without specifying.
Last Tuesday, a Swedish appeals court upheld the guilty verdict and life sentence for murder and serious crimes against international law for the former official Hamid Noury.

“We seriously object to the verdict and to what has taken place during this citizen’s long period of detention… and his basic rights have not been respected in Sweden’s prisons,” Kanani told a weekly news conference. “We hope Sweden will take serious actions to compensate for its errors.”
Earlier in December, Iran began the trial of a Swedish national, Johan Floderus, employed by the European Union who is charged with spying for Israel and “corruption on earth,” a crime that carries the death penalty.
Rights groups and Western governments have accused the Islamic Republic of trying to extract political concessions from other countries through arrests on security charges that may have been trumped up.
Tehran says such arrests are based on its criminal code and it denies holding people for political reasons.
Rights groups have also warned that Ahmadreza Djalali, a Swedish-Iranian national sentenced to death in Iran on charges of spying for Israel, may be executed following the verdict against Noury.

STOCKHOLM: A Swedish appeals court on Tuesday confirmed the conviction of a former Iranian prison official handed a life sentence for crimes committed during a 1988 purge of dissidents.
The verdict could have repercussions on the fate of Swedish prisoners in Iran, including EU diplomat Johan Floderus who has been held for more than 600 days.
The Svea Court of Appeal said in a statement it “affirmed the judgment… in significant parts” of 62-year-old Hamid Noury, who in July 2022 was given a life sentence “for grave breaches of international humanitarian law and murder.”
“Our assessment is that the prosecutor’s case is robust and overall compelling and that the district court was correct to find the prosecutors charges largely substantiated,“ judge Robert Green said.
Noury was arrested at a Stockholm airport in November 2019 after Iranian dissidents in Sweden filed police complaints against him.
The case relates to the killing of at least 5,000 prisoners across Iran, allegedly ordered by supreme leader Ayatollah Khomeini, to avenge attacks carried out by exiled opposition group the People’s Mujahedin of Iran (MEK) at the end of the Iran-Iraq war of 1980-88.
Sweden has tried Noury under its principle of universal jurisdiction, which allows it to try a case regardless of where the offences took place.
