Antidote to gloomy news in the world as 1,525 wear swimsuits for annual Siberian snow festival.
Skiers and snowboarders from around the world marked the end of the 2017-18 winter season under the sun in top ski resort Sheregesh. The news has been grim lately but Siberians joined by guests from many counties cast off the gloom for the annual ‘naked’ descent. Wearing bikinis and bathing shorts a total of 1,525 claimed a new Russian record for the daring downhill escapade – in a temperature of around 5C. In fact, more have taken part in this GrelkaFest event in the past, but not during an official record attempt.

Stanislav Konenko, editor of the Russian Book of Records, approved the new record. ‘I am often asked which record is the most interesting,’ he said. ‘I always say that this is the coolest record. ‘It’s very pleasant to be here, always a really positive atmosphere. ‘Preparation for the record is always at a high level. ‘There were no gross violations of the rules for setting the record. ‘All issues were resolved on the spot.’
Participants Kristina Tikhomirova and Irina Komarova.
Last year 1,496 people took part – this year some 1,525. The main prize was awarded to a participant named Carolina, who came to Sheregesh all the way from Uganda. Others flew in from Sweden and Canada. People also flocked here from all over Russia. One participant Kristina Tikhomirova said: ‘I was told that Siberian girls are the craziest and most fearless – and they are completely right.
‘It was an explosive day. ‘The weather was super, the people are cheerful, so, if you were not here, you lost a lot!’

Aside from the downhill record, there were ski-jumping and snowboarding competitions, a beauty contest, and concerts. Sheregesh, in Kemerovo region, is Siberia’s most developed downhill skiing resort, located in the Gornaia Shoria region of the Altai mountain range. Originally constructed as a mining settlement, in Stalinist times there was a local Gulag nearby. Its 12,000 inmates built the local railway line.
