DES MOINES, Iowa—Little more than half an hour after the Iowa caucuses began, the results thundered in: former President Donald J. Trump had notched a definitive victory.
One rival moved fast and broke up a once-ambitious campaign.
Despite months of strenuous campaigning, Vivek Ramaswamy, a businessman, endured a distant fourth-place finish in the Hawkeye State.
The very next day, Jan. 16, the entrepreneur and “anti-woke” investor joined President Trump at a rally in the Granite State, where he delivered a characteristically high-energy pitch for the top candidate.
On stage in Atkinson, New Hampshire, President Trump wore a wry smile as Mr. Ramaswamy sang his praises.
“He has a big, beautiful, bright future ahead,” President Trump said of the 38-year-old Mr. Ramaswamy.
With New Hampshire’s Jan. 23 primary now less than a week away, Mr. Ramaswamy’s moves raise a few questions.

RELATED: Sparks Fly Between Trump, Ramaswamy Ahead of Critical Iowa Caucus: ‘Don’t Waste Your Vote!’
Published January 18, 2024
As Iowans get ready to make their decisions in Monday’s Republican primary caucuses, tensions between two candidates who up till now seemed to complement rather than criticize each other have risen to the surface.
The exchange between former President Donald Trump and businessman Vivek Ramaswamy began when, without explanation, Trump lashed out at Ramaswamy in a Truth Social post Saturday.
“Vivek started his campaign as a great supporter, ‘the best President in generations,’ etc.,” Trump wrote, apparently out of the blue. “Unfortunately, now all he does is disguise his support in the form of deceitful campaign tricks.
“Very sly, but a vote for Vivek is a vote for the ‘other side’ — don’t get duped by this. Vote for ‘TRUMP,’ don’t waste your vote!” he added. “Vivek is not MAGA.”
He then implied that much of Ramaswamy’s support was probably coming from voters who’d prefer to have Trump back in office but fear that the various prosecutions against him will prevent that from happening, and therefore they’re going with Ramaswamy as their second choice. But there’s no need for that reasoning, Trump said, because he would prevail in those legal cases, he predicted.
“The Biden Indictments against his Political Opponent will never be allowed in this Country, they are already beginning to fall! MAGA!!!” he wrote.
Ramaswamy responded in a long post to X that wasn’t anywhere near as combative as Trump’s post had been.
He stared out by acknowledging the fact that he’d seen Trump’s post, but blamed it on the former president’s “campaign advisors” rather that Trump himself.

A day after he withdrew from the 2024 US presidential race, Indian-American entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy received an enthusiastic welcome from Donald Trump’s supporters while he endorsed his former rival and ex-US president.
The 38-year-old Republican, who quit after he failed to make a mark in the first US election test in Iowa, was greeted with chants of “VP, VP, VP” after he joined Trump on stage.
Introducing Ramaswamy as a “friend” and a “true leader”, Trump applauded his former rival. A brief handshake and a hug later, Ramaswamy delivered a passionate speech calling on supporters to back Trump in the presidential race.
“Going forward he will have my full endorsement for the presidency, and I think we’re gonna do the right thing for this country. There is not a better choice left in this race than this man right here. And that is why I am asking you to do the right thing as New Hampshire and to vote for Donald J. Trump as your next president,” an earnest Ramaswamy implored the crowd.
As the two leaders shook hands before Ramaswamy left the stage, the crowd broke into chants of “VP, VP” hinting at a possible deputy post for the biotech entrepreneur alongside Trump.
“Pretty good, isn’t it? He is a fantastic guy, and he really got something that is very special. He is going to be working with us, and he will be working with us for a long time,” the former US president said.
Ramaswamy has been one of the most staunch defendants of Trump, standing by him through his four indictments including one for attempting to overturn the 2016 US elections. Ramaswamy vowed to pardon Trump on his first day if he was elected President.
