On Tuesday’s broadcast of Newsmax TV’s “Rob Schmitt Tonight,” Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) responded to the hospitalization of Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin that the White House was not informed of by pointing out that Secretary Austin himself accused Tuberville of endangering military readiness by blocking group votes on military promotions before Austin went “AWOL” by undergoing surgery and being hospitalized without informing President Joe Biden.
Tuberville said, “It’s outrageous that the head of the largest military in history has been hospitalized for a week and he didn’t tell anybody. You know what that tells me? There’s no respect for Joe Biden being the President of the United States. Somebody was told, I promise you that, but they didn’t tell Biden because he’s the Rodney Dangerfield of being President, no respect. This puts us in danger. Thank God our enemies didn’t take advantage of it. These people just spent months lecturing me about acting officials, these promotions I’ve been holding for abortion. They’ve been telling me Sen. Tuberville’s holding back on military readiness, and we have an AWOL Secretary of Defense that doesn’t tell anybody. … At the end of the day, this is Joe Biden’s responsibility. He should have been fired.”

For four days last week, no one in the White House, State Department, the Intelligence Community, or most of the Pentagon knew that Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin was in the Walter Reed National Medical Center intensive care unit. When National Security Council spokesman John Kirby joined White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre for a joint press conference today, any hope we may have had that the story was overblown was not put to rest. On the contrary, the new information makes the situation look much worse.
Before going to today’s briefing, let’s review the bidding.
Late Friday afternoon, the Department of Defense released a statement saying that Austin was in the intensive care unit at Walter Reed NMC due to “complications” from an unspecified “elective” surgical procedure. The statement revealed that he’d been admitted to the ICU on New Year’s Day. As happens with these things, more facts started dribbling out. As it turned out, Congress wasn’t informed of Austin’s incapacity unit 15 minutes before the rest of the world. The service chiefs, service secretaries, and other senior Pentagon staff found out two hours before the public announcement. We were told that Austin’s deputy, Kathleen Hicks, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and Joe Biden got the news on Thursday (keep this sentence in mind because we’re going to talk more about that later). Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman C. Q. Brown was told on Tuesday. Supposedly, Austin’s chief of staff, Kelly Magsamen, found out on Tuesday, but she was home with the “flu” and decided to wait until she got back to work on Thursday before telling anyone.
At some point, Austin’s personal staff started telling people that he was “working from home.” At that point, the problem stopped being just an Austin problem and became an issue of his entire staff being loyal to him and not to the institution or president they served.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin underwent surgery in December 2023 for prostate cancer, the U.S. Department of Defense disclosed on Jan. 9.
Doctors from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, identified the cancer through laboratory tests in early December. They decided to perform an operation to treat and cure it. Mr. Austin went to the center on Dec. 22 and underwent a “minimally invasive surgical procedure” to treat and cure prostate cancer, the doctors said. He was under general anesthesia.
Mr. Austin was released the following day.
After experiencing complications including severe abdominal pain, Mr. Austin returned to the hospital on Jan. 1. Doctors diagnosed a urinary tract infection and transferred him to the intensive care unit for close monitoring. Additional evaluation revealed fluid had collected in his abdomen, which affected his small intestines and resulted in a backup of intestinal content. Doctors placed a tube through Mr. Austin’s nose and drained the fluid.
Since then, Mr. Austin has “progressed steadily,” said Dr. John Maddox, trauma medical director, and Dr. Gregory Chesnut, a urology specialist, in a joint statement. The infection has cleared and Mr. Austin is expected to fully recover, “although this can be a slow process,” they said.
Mr. Austin was still hospitalized, in good condition, as of Jan. 9. He has been working, according to military officials.
