Soldiers working to prepare the bodies of Israeli victims of the Palestinian Hamas terror attack Oct. 7 for burial say that they have seen signs of rape, mutilation, and torture that they could not possibly have imagined.
The Daily Mail reported:
‘There is evidence of mass rape of so brutal that they broke their victims’ pelvis – women, grandmothers, children.
…
‘People whose heads have been cut off. Women standing in their night dresses woken up and shot. Faces blasted off. Heads smashed and their brains spilling out.
‘A baby was cut out of a pregnant woman and beheaded and then the mother was beheaded.”
The bodies are being prepared by an Israeli military unit that works to bury the bodies in accordance with Jewish custom, which requires that as much as possible of the body be present at burial, and that burial take place as soon as possible.
The sheer scale of the terror attack, and the difficulty of identifying some of the burnt or disfigured remains, has meant the process of preparing the bodies has taken weeks in some cases.
There are also civilian religious organizations, like ZAKA, that work to collect the remains of the dead for burial — and that have grown their services to include first aid and search and rescue operations.

RELATED: 5 dead and 5 injured — names on a scrap of paper show impact of Gaza war on a US family
In blue ink on a scrap of white paper that sits on his desk, Jehad Adwan scribbles the names and ages of his wife’s relatives.
Published October 21, 2023
Next to five names, he writes “killed” or simply, “K.” Beside another five, he marks “injured” or “I.”
With every news report, social media post and conversation with a relative, he’s keeping track – from his suburban Minneapolis home – of the toll the Israel-Hamas war is taking on his family, and his wife’s family, in Gaza.
“What is preoccupying my brain, my everything, is just the fear of what´s going to happen next,” he said in an interview.
The family´s plight reflects the far reach of the war for Palestinian and Israeli families around the world.
For Adwan, even the hospital bombing that killed hundreds in Gaza had a personal connection. It was the place where he trained to become a nurse before moving to the U.S. and becoming a nursing professor at Minnesota State University, Mankato.

The Israel-Gaza conflict has taken a severe toll on journalists since Hamas launched its unprecedented attack against Israel on October 7 and Israel declared war on the militant Palestinian group, launching strikes on the blockaded Gaza Strip.
CPJ is investigating all reports of journalists killed, injured, detained, or missing in the war, including those hurt as hostilities spread to neighboring Lebanon. As of October 21, at least 22 journalists were among the more than 4,000 dead on both sides since the war began on October 7, with hundreds killed in Tuesday’s hospital blast in Gaza.
Journalists in Gaza face particularly high risks as they try to cover the conflict in the face of a ground assault by Israeli troops, devastating Israeli airstrikes, disrupted communications, and extensive power outages. As of October 21:
- 22 journalists were confirmed dead: 18 Palestinian, 3 Israeli, and 1 Lebanese.
- 8 journalists were reported injured.
- 3 journalists were reported missing or detained.
- Continued attacks, arrests, threats, and censorship.
CPJ is also investigating numerous unconfirmed reports of other journalists being killed, missing, detained, hurt or threatened, and of damage to media offices and journalists’ homes.
“CPJ emphasizes that journalists are civilians doing important work during times of crisis and must not be targeted by warring parties,” said Sherif Mansour, CPJ’s Middle East and North Africa program coordinator. “Journalists across the region are making great sacrifices to cover this heartbreaking conflict. All parties must take steps to ensure their safety.”
