On Thursday’s broadcast of NewsNation’s “The Hill,” White House Principal Deputy Press Secretary Olivia Dalton responded to a question on whether President Joe Biden would support the Laken Riley Act that passed the House on a bipartisan basis by stating that “the folks who are calling for this, they should really get on board with the bipartisan border security agreement.”
Host Blake Burman asked, “Laken Riley Act, Olivia, passed by the House today. All Republicans, 37 Democrats supported it. It would require the detention of any migrant who committed burglary or theft. That illegal immigrant who murdered Laken Riley had committed theft, and then was let go. Would the President support that bill if the Senate passes it?”
Dalton responded, “You know what, the folks who are calling for this, they should really get on board with the bipartisan border security agreement. All of this adds up to a challenge that we’re facing that is pretty significant in our country. The President knows that, and that is why we spent four months working with the Senate in good faith on a bipartisan basis to get a tough and fair deal. And House Republicans really should come to the table on that.”

WASHINGTON – President Joe Biden mentioned murdered Georgia college student Laken Riley while discussing immigration during his State of the Union address Thursday before Congress.
The president was discussing a proposed bill aimed at strengthening border security when he was interrupted by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), demanding that Biden “say her name.”
“[Laken] Riley. An innocent young woman who was killed by an illegal. That’s right. But how many of thousands of people have been killed by illegals,” Biden said. “To her parents, my heart goes out to having lost children myself. I understand. But look if we change the dynamics at the border, people pay these smugglers eight thousand bucks to get across the border. Because they know if they get by, it will be six to eight years before they have a hearing.”
Biden mispronounced Laken Riley’s first name as “Lincoln.”

RELATED: Killing of Laken Riley is now front and center of US immigration debate and 2024 presidential race

ATLANTA (AP) — With an unscripted clashbetween President Joe Biden and a Georgia congresswoman at Thursday night’s State of the Union speech, the slaying of a Georgia nursing student was further cemented as a political rallying point in the 2024 presidential race.
Laken Riley, 22, has become the face of immigration reform for many conservatives in the days since she was killed while jogging in a park on the University of Georgia campus on Feb. 22.
At the State of the Union address, Biden held up a pin with Riley’s name on it as U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene shouted from the gallery: “Say her name!”
HERE’S WHAT TO KNOW
Immigration has emerged as a major campaign issue, dividing the nation and straining resources in New York, Chicago, Boston and other cities after migrants settle there and in communities across the country after crossing the nation’s southern border. Republicans say some migrants with criminal backgrounds are not vetted and are improperly released into communities, putting U.S. citizens at risk. They have seized on the Georgia case to make those claims as the 2024 presidential election heats up.
