South American president-elect faces different task from his fellow populists, who rushed to hail his victory
Hours after Javier Milei’s election victory, Donald Trump posted on social media: “Congratulations to Javier Milei on a great race for president of Argentina . . . you will turn your country around and truly make Argentina great again!” Milei responded by thanking Trump: “Your presidency was an example for all those of us who defend the ideas of freedom.”
Another hard-right ex-president, Jair Bolsonaro, was also quick to congratulate the radical libertarian, speaking excitedly to Milei alongside his lawmaker son Eduardo on a video call in which the Argentine president-elect invited them to his inauguration. Milei’s insurgent election campaign, fought largely over social media, borrowed heavily from the Trump and Bolsonaro scripts. His pledge to do away with Argentina’s political “caste” evoked Trump’s anti-establishment “drain the swamp” message.
But the Argentine, a self-styled “anarcho-capitalist” intent on shrinking the state as far as possible, differs from both Trump and Bolsonaro in key aspects of his thinking and the political organisation behind him.

Javier Milei won the run-off with a much wider margin than anticipated

Javier Milei, the anti-establishment politician who cruised to victory in the Argentine presidential election last week, has courted intense controversy with radical, provocative policy proposals and statements.
This led many detractors of the self-styled “anarcho-capitalist” to call his candidacy a “leap into the void”.

Taming inflation takes time
Javier Milei had proposed to dollarise the economy and eliminate the Argentine Central Bank as a strategy to “kill” hyper-inflation. This meant making the US dollar the national currency in place of the Argentine peso, whose value, Mr Milei said, had been “melting like blocks of ice in the Sahara”.

The newly elected President of Argentina, Javier Gerardo Milei, is proposing large-scale reforms that will take 35 years to implement. These include cutting government spending, abolishing the central bank and privatizing railways, airlines and oil companies, informs “La Nacion”.
After the victory of Javier Milei in the 2023 elections, many began to wonder what the political program and proposals of the elected president are. The document containing the main ideological provisions was duly submitted by the ‘La Libertad Avanza’ party to the Electoral Chamber as a prerequisite for the approval of the liberal economist’s candidacy for the presidency.
The first paragraph defines liberalism, which he often repeats in his interviews and public appearances: “Liberalism is unlimited respect for the lives of others, based on the principle of non-aggression and the protection of the rights to life, liberty and private property. Its fundamental institutions are markets, free from government interference, free competition, division of labor and social cooperation.”
