At first glance, Starr County in Texas is a quiet place.
Its gently rolling hills are blanketed with low-growing mesquite and shrubs intersected by small gullies and streams, and many of its small, sleepy towns seem plucked from old Westerns.
But the US border with Mexico is never far off. On peaceful days in towns like Roma, residents and visitors can clearly hear loud chatting, children playing or roosters crowing across the Rio Grande.
For decades, the county’s environment, proximity to the river and access to highways have made it a busy crossing point for migrants – and now, a focus of the heated debate over border security in the US.
On Wednesday, the Biden administration announced it would build an approximately 20-mile (32km) section of border wall in the area, an announcement that stood in stark contrast to then-candidate Joe Biden’s 2020 declaration that he would not build “another foot of wall” as president. He halted construction on his first day in office.
While President Biden and administration officials have claimed that the new border wall section is being built begrudgingly – because of funds specifically appropriated by the Donald Trump administration in 2019 – the announcement has once again sparked intense debate over the controversial border control measure that was once a signature policy of then-president Trump.
In total, the former president ordered renovations and fortification of just under 460 miles (740km) of border wall, although only about 50 miles (80km) were new. Since he left office, Mr Trump and some Republican lawmakers have called for additional border barriers to be built amid rising migrant figures at the southern border.
Whether or not border walls can be effective has become a hotly contested and intensely political debate.

Joe Biden on Friday delivered remarks on the disastrous September jobs report.
The Biden Regime is once again using voodoo math to make it appear the September jobs report was a total blowout and ‘better than expected.’
“The U.S. economy added 336,000 jobs in September, the Labor Department said. Economists polled by Dow Jones expected 170,000 jobs. To be sure, wages rose less than expected last month.” CNBC reported.
A real deep dive into the numbers reveals a different story. The jobs added are mostly seasonal (teachers) and part-time work.
According to Zero Hedge’s analysis of the September jobs report, 885,000 full-Time jobs were lost, 1 Million+ part-time jobs were added, and record number of people have multiple jobs.
Biden took a few questions after his remarks.
He got spooked after a reporter called him out on his lies about the border wall funding.
Joe Biden waived 26 federal laws to expedite the building of the border wall in the Rio Grande Valley.
This is after he promised not to build one inch of border wall.
On Thursday, Joe Biden blamed Congress for the border wall construction.
“The border wall money was appropriated for the border wall. I tried to get them to reappropriate – to redirect the money – they didn’t. They wouldn’t. And in the mean time there is nothing under the law other than they have to use the money for what it was appropriated. I can’t stop that!” Biden said.

The latest episode in the ongoing comedic series based on Joe Biden’s series of reversals in his attitude toward Donald Trump’s border wall comes to us from south of the border and a person who is directly impacted by these decisions. Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) decided to weigh in on the situation and spiced up his comments with some inside information about private conversations he had with people from the Biden administration. Assuming he’s laying all of his cards on the table, AMLO isn’t buying it. He doesn’t believe that Biden and his team really want to build any more sections of the wall and doesn’t think it’s even going to happen. (He may be right about that, but more on that in a moment.) He called the idea “pure publicity” and suggested that he may have gotten his information during meetings with American administration officials including Antony Blinken. (NY Post)
The U.S. government does not want to build new sections of wall on its border with Mexico, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said on Friday, expressing doubt that the planned construction would be carried out.
“It’s pure publicity,” Lopez Obrador said in a regular morning press conference after the Biden administration announced it would build additional sections of border wall, carrying forward a signature policy of the Trump administration.
A high-ranking delegation of U.S. officials met Thursday with their Mexican counterparts, among them U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
AMLO has been a pretty straight shooter since taking office. Sometimes too straight, to the chagrin of both American and Canadian leaders. So I’m inclined to take him at his word and believe that this is real opinion of the border wall plans. And that’s probably what he was told by American officials in confidence.

On Aug. 20, 2020, Joe Biden told an NPR interviewer that “not one more foot of wall would be built” if he became president. Today, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said that there was an “acute and immediate need” to waive dozens of environmental laws at the border to restart construction on the border wall begun by Biden’s predecessor.
The crisis that Biden refuses to call a crisis is once again forcing the president to adopt the tactics and the ideas of Donald Trump, whose methods in drastically reducing border incursions Biden and the Democrats bitterly denounced.
“There is presently an acute and immediate need to construct physical barriers and roads in the vicinity of the border of the United States in order to prevent unlawful entries into the United States in the project areas pursuant to sections 102(a) and 102(b) of IIRIRA (Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996),” Mayorkas said.
This isn’t the first time that Biden has adopted a strategy that Donald Trump first used to control the border after denouncing it as “racist” or “inhumane.” Biden hammered Trump’s “Remain in Mexico” before the election, but he maintained it until the Supreme Court made Biden end it in 2022.
