The horrific surprise attacks by the terrorist group Hamas on Israel are obviously deeply disturbing—but one has to ask, how come nobody saw it coming? It’s disturbingly similar to the abomination of 9/11, where an unprecedented, seemingly inconceivable strike took place—yet the signs of such an impending assault were quite evident when viewed in hindsight.
David Khalfa, co-director of the North Africa and Middle East Observatory at French think tank the Foundation Jean-Jaurès, says that, once again, there were warning signs:
It is a major failure for the Israeli intelligence services. A failure that could even be described as historic and without exaggerating, could be compared to what happened in 1973.
Israel is a country that is on permanent alert, ready to go into battle at any time. It is always on its toes. It is clear that there was a certain degree of unpreparedness, probably an error in the analysis and estimation on the part of Israeli intelligence services, but also in the preparation of Israeli special forces [for an attack like this].
He points out that the Israelis were completely caught off guard (emphasis mine):
The attack was three-dimensional; it took place on land, sea and by air. That is probably what surprised the Israelis.
Israel is a country that relies on its technology to anticipate threats and neutralise them before they arise. It is clear that there was an issue regarding anticipation, and probably a problem in their analysis [of] the threat level.
The scenario Israeli intelligence services were expecting was an invasion from the north, via Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.
They were blindsided.
And what of the American intelligence apparatus? Why were they not aware of the impending threat? Some theorize that President Joe Biden’s resentment toward Israel might mean that we wouldn’t even share intelligence information with hard-liner Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, but there are also reports that we completely missed it:

Hamas attacked Israel in a coordinated attack whose sophistication was not lost on observers. It was an assault out of the ordinary for this group, with rocket attacks followed by an air, sea, and land attack by its terrorist operatives. Fifty years ago, almost to the day, on Oct. 6, 1973, Israel was attacked on the holy day of Yom Kippur. I remember being a child attending services and the Rabbi stopping the liturgy to tell us what had happened and to pray for Israel. On Oct. 7, 2023, Israel has again been attacked, this time on the holiday of Shemini Atzeret. Once again, our people and nation have been attacked on a holy day. All reservists have been called up, and Israel is again fighting for her life.
Hamas terrorists infiltrated Israeli communities through the Gaza Strip and launched a surprise attack in conjunction with over 5,000 rockets fired into Israel. Horrific videos of terror are filling the internet. One clip from Gaza shows a lifeless Israeli soldier being trampled by an angry crowd. Hamas asks that all Arab nations attack Israel immediately to “set the earth on fire.” The Hamas commander, Mohammed Deif, specifically asked all terror groups in Syria, Lebanon, and Iraq — all of which are funded through Iran — to join in a war against Israel. Israeli civilians are being specifically attacked, slaughtered, and kidnapped as hostages. We see video after video demonstrating that the Hamas terrorists act in ways that are beyond comprehension by any human being. Rather, they act like sick, rabid animals or zombies who have lost any sense of humanity.
But let’s all be honest: They have acted like this for decades. Hamas and its allies, all of which are funded by and through Iran, have behaved this way over and over as they have prayed for the destruction of both Israel and the United States. They have celebrated violence at every opportunity and demonstrated repeatedly that they would like to do exactly what they have been doing: kill Israelis and Americans, desecrate their corpses, and perform horrors that are unimaginable to any sane human being.
