The Philippines has accused the Chinese coastguard of using water cannon to “obstruct” three government boats that were conducting their regular resupply mission near a reef off its coast in the South China Sea.
The incident on Saturday took place near the Scarborough Shoal, which is claimed by both countries, and which Beijing seizedfrom Manila in 2012 after a months-long standoff. Videos released by the Philippine coastguard showed Chinese coastguard ships hitting the vessels with powerful blasts of water.

The Philippines and China on Sunday accused each other of dangerous maneuvers and causing a collision in contested waters in the South China Sea, the latest in a string of maritime confrontations between the two countries that have heightened regional tensions.

The Philippine Coast Guard said at least two of its vessels had been damaged as a result of being fired on by water cannon.
However, the Chinese Coast Guard said Philippine ships had “illegally intruded” in its waters and it was taking “control measures against the Philippine vessels in accordance with the law.”
